Final Score: Atlanta 103, Boston 100
Atlanta, GA (Best E Casino) - In the playoffs for the first time since 1999, the Atlanta Hawks need one more win to take down the top-seeded Boston Celtics. Joe Johnson scored eight of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, as the Hawks forced a deciding seventh game in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with a dramatic 103-100 victory at Philips Arena. Game 7 will be Sunday afternoon in Boston, and the home team has won every contest thus far. To take the series, the Hawks will have to finally win a road playoff game. They've lost 10 straight such contests. The Hawks' last road victory in the postseason was on May 8, 1997 in Chicago during the East semifinals, which was won by the Bulls in five games. The Hawks are trying to become the second eighth seed to knock off a No. 1 seed in a best-of- seven series. It happened last year when Golden State upset Dallas in the first round, clinching that set in six games. Marvin Williams had 18 points, but saw limited time in the second half because of a sprained left knee for the Hawks, while Mike Bibby added 17 in the win. Al Horford had 16 points, Josh Childress 15 and Josh Smith 11 for Atlanta. Kevin Garnett scored 22 for the Celtics, who played without standout Paul Pierce in the latter part of the fourth quarter. Pierce fouled out with 4:44 left and totaled 17 points, three less than teammate Ray Allen.
Final Score: Utah 113, Houston 91
Salt Lake City, UT (Best E Casino) - Deron Williams scored 13 of his 25 points during the pivotal third quarter, leading Utah into the second round of the playoffs with a 113-91 victory over the Houston Rockets. Williams also had nine assists, and Mehmet Okur tallied 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Jazz, who won their Western Conference quarterfinal series, 4-2, and will face the top-seeded Lakers in the next round. Game 1 is Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles. Tracy McGrady had 40 points and 10 rebounds for Houston. He has never been out of the first round in seven trips to the playoffs - once with Toronto, three times with Orlando and Houston. This marked the second straight year the Jazz beat the Rockets in the playoffs. Houston also lost its seventh straight playoff series, last advancing past the first round when the Rockets were beaten by Utah in the 1997 West finals. The Rockets lost the services of point guard Rafer Alston due to a sprained ankle in the first half and McGrady was forced to try and carry the load, although he was held scoreless in a lopsided third quarter when the Jazz outscored Houston, 27-11.
