East Rutherford, NJ (Best E Casino) - Steve Spagnuolo will remain with the
New York Giants as defensive coordinator of the Super Bowl champions after interviewing for the head coaching vacancy of the
Washington Redskins earlier this week.
Spagnuolo, in his first season as a defensive coordinator, devised a brilliant scheme that limited the high-powered New England Patriots to a season-low 14 points in Super Bowl XLII, and became a hot commodity for a head coaching job.
Redskins owner Dan Snyder met with Spagnuolo earlier this week to discuss the vacancy created when Joe Gibbs resigned on January 8.
"I appreciated Mr. Snyder giving me the opportunity to visit with him," said Spagnuolo on the Giants' website. "I have a great deal of respect for him and the Washington Redskins organization. I was happy to have the opportunity to explore that situation, but I am equally happy to be staying in New York and look forward to continued success with the Giants."
Reports have circulated that Spagnuolo will receive a new contract and team president and CEO John Mara indicated that such a move has been made.
"We have made the appropriate adjustments in our commitment to Steve in recognition of what he and the defensive coaches and players achieved this season," Mara said on the team's website.
The Giants had trouble adjusting to Spagnuolo's system early, allowing a combined 80 points in a pair of losses to Dallas and Green Bay to start the season. The unit progressed as the year went along and helped the Giants capture their first Super Bowl crown in 17 years with 17-14 victory over the heavily-favored Patriots this past Sunday in Arizona.
"I thought Steve and our defensive staff and players did an outstanding job this season," said Giants head coach Tom Coughlin on the team's website. "It was the first season for that group to work together, and they challenged themselves to get better every week, and they did. Steve is a hard worker who has quickly earned the respect of the players and coaches, and he has earned the consideration he is being given. Needless to say, I am happy that he will be remaining here."
The Redskins, meanwhile, still need to find a replacement for Gibbs. They've interviewed numerous candidates over the past month and former Giants head coach Jim Fassel could be among the favorites.
