Golden State Warriors past the
Minnesota Timberwolves, 105-98.
Stephen Jackson chipped in 21 points for the Warriors, who have won three in a row and four of their last five contests. Monta Ellis added 17 points, while Al Harrington contributed 12 in the win.
Antoine Walker had a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds, but the Timberwolves dropped their third straight and have lost 11 of 12. Al Jefferson poured in 18 points and grabbed 14 boards, while Ryan Gomes tallied 15 points in the loss.
The Warriors opened their biggest lead of the second half, 20 points, on a Mickael Pietrus three-pointer 40 seconds into the fourth quarter.
The T'Wolves responded with five straight Walker points, which led to a 22-8 run that pulled Minnesota within six, 94-88, with just under five minutes remaining in regulation.
Minnesota drew within four points on a pair of Rashad McCants free throws, but Jackson hit a three-pointer and followed it with a layup to increase the Warriors' lead to 101-92 with 2:45 on the clock.
Minnesota never pulled within seven the rest of the way and the Warriors held on for the win.
"This was a game we definitely needed to win," Harrington said. "The team was struggling coming in and we had to not take them for granted, we had to play our basketball and we did that."
The teams played close early on, and the Warriors led 28-24 after the first behind Ellis' 12 opening-quarter points.
A Davis three-pointer sparked a 19-4 Golden State run midway through the second stanza and Davis capped the surge via a three-point play. The spree left the Warriors ahead 50-38 with just over two minutes to play in the opening half. The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the period and Golden State took a 56-44 lead into the break.
"I think in the second quarter, right before the half, we kind of had a chance," Walker said. "We tried to keep it at a four-point lead, but we let them get on a run."
Two straight Jefferson buckets before four minutes elapsed in the third quarter sparked a 10-0 Minnesota run. By the time Gomes capped the surge with a jumper 2 1/2 minutes later, the T'Wolves were within four, 62-58.
However, the Warriors immediately answered with a 12-2 run, sparked by a Jackson jumper. Davis' alley-oop layup with just under three minutes to go in the third capped the run and left the Warriors ahead, 74-60.
Golden State scored the final three baskets -- good for seven points -- of the frame and took an 83-66 lead into the fourth quarter.
