East Rutherford, NJ (Best E Casino) - Rashard Lewis posted a season-high with 27 points, and chipped in with five rebounds as Orlando ripped New Jersey, 95-70, at the Izod Center.
Dwight Howard had a big game with 21 points and 19 boards for the Magic, who have won three straight. Orlando's 8-2 start is the best since it began the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season at 9-2. The Magic also moved to an NBA-best 6-0 on the road.
Howard became the youngest player in NBA history to reach 3,000 career rebounds at 21 years and 343 days, besting Shaquille O'Neal, who accomplished the feat at 23 years, 32 days old.
"My team did a great job of finding me when I was open," Howard said. "I'm not worried about getting the ball so much, as I am of getting rebounds in close. It's a great honor. Thank God I've been able to stay healthy in my fourth year."
Jameer Nelson contributed 15 points and dished out seven assists, and Hedo Turkoglu added 12 points and seven rebounds for the victors.
Richard Jefferson scored 15 points for the Nets, who have lost four straight games. Jason Kidd recorded a triple-double with 11 points, 10 assists and a career-best 19 rebounds, while Antoine Wright has 14 points and Bostjan Nachbar 13 in defeat.
The Magic began the final quarter on a 12-1 run, and the Nets did not make a shot from the field until Allen's deuce with 5:38 to play made it an 81-62 contest.
A Lewis three-pointer kicked off a game-ending 14-8 spurt which included four points from Trevor Ariza off the bench, and put the finishing touches on the 25-point win.
"Tonight, I didn't think we came out with great focus, we didn't necessarily play very hard," said a disappointed Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy. "They got a lot of good shots and they just had so much trouble making them. They brought more to the game than we did. We got off to a good start because they were missing. I'll take the win, and be happy with it, especially on the road."
Orlando pulled ahead by 18-8 in the opening quarter thanks to a 16-2 run midway through ending on a Keith Bogans three from the corner with 4:21 remaining. Nelson's trey made it a 20-10 game with 2:42 to go, and the visitors extended that to a 15-point edge after one.
Poor shooting continued to sink the Nets in the second, and although they drew within eight on Wright's jumper with 1:36 to play, a Lewis three and a Howard dunk gave the Magic a 45-32 advantage at the half.
Turkoglu's lay-in with a little more than four minutes gone in the third put Orlando ahead by 22, 58-36, but New Jersey finally woke up and mounted a challenge, putting together a 15-5 burst thanks to seven points from Jefferson and six by Kidd to come within 64-51.
However, the Nets couldn't maintain the momentum and trailed by 10, 69-59, heading into the fourth.
"There were a couple things that didn't go our way, some calls," Jefferson noted. "We shoot 28 percent, and although we're holding teams to 41 percent defensively, we're having turnovers and not hitting easy buckets and when you lose a game like this, you see how we're not doing a good job converting."
