Daytona Beach, FL (Best E Casino) - Bill France Jr., who ran NASCAR when his father Bill France Sr. retired in 1972 until his retirement in 2003, passed away at the age of 74. France was one of the men responsible for turning NASCAR from a regional sport into the national and international power that it is today. Before he took over, few races were telecast. Now, every race is covered from coast to coast. France turned the presidency of NASCAR over to Mike Helton in 2000 after being diagnosed with cancer. He made his son Brian France the CEO and chairman of NASCAR in 2003. "He blazed so many trails for our sport," said Helton. "He was determined to follow the vision of his father while also expanding on that vision. Over nearly four decades, he did a masterful job." France Jr. was a member of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, the Motorcycle Hall of Fame and the Automotive Hall of Fame. "Bill France Jr. was not only a leader in our sport but he was also a very good friend," said car owner Richard Childress. "Not only did he teach me a lot about our sport but he taught me numerous lessons about life. Over the last several years, NASCAR has grown to an unprecedented level of popularity. None of that would have been possible without the vision and leadership Mr. France provided. My thoughts and prayers go out to Betty Jane, Brian, Lesa and the entire France family."
