Boston, MA (Best E Casino) - Jason Blake scored the decisive goal in the shootout to lift the
New York Islanders to a 5-4 victory over the
Boston Bruins at TD Banknorth Garden.
Viktor Kozlov scored late in the third period and added an assist for the Islanders, who have won two straight. Rick DiPietro made 38 saves and Miroslav Satan added two helpers, as the Islanders beat Boston for a sixth straight time.
Marc Savard scored a goal and added two assists for the Bruins, who have dropped two in a row. Zdeno Chara returned to the lineup after missing two games with a lower back injury and scored a goal and added an assist in the loss.
Hannu Toivonen got the start between the pipes for Boston and allowed four goals on 35 shots.
With both teams scoring a goal after three players in the shootout, Brad Boyes had a chance to win it for Boston, but was denied by DiPietro, who stacked his pads against the right post on Boyes' attempt to stuff the puck home.
Blake then quickly skated in on his attempt and waited for Toivonen to drop to the ice, before lifting the puck into the top left corner of the net to give the Islanders the extra point.
Boston struck first and took a 1-0 lead after Patrice Bergeron tallied his 15th goal of the season 3:21 into the opening period. Chara fluttered a wrist shot from the right point that Bergeron re-directed past DiPietro from in front.
The Bruins made it 2-0 on a goal by Savard at 8:40 of the first. From the left circle, Savard backhanded a shot that hit off Brendan Witt of the Islanders and over a sliding DiPietro.
Randy Robitaille scored 5:39 into the second stanza for New York to make it 2-1. From the slot, Robitaille took a feed from Satan and unleashed a wrister that hit off Toivonen's right arm and over the goal line.
The Islanders tied the contest at 2-2 just 22 seconds into the third period after Trent Hunter crashed the net and banged in a loose puck before being pushed into the net.
A power-play goal by Chara put the Bruins back in front at 4:20 of the third frame. From the right point, Chara ripped a heavy slap shot that beat a screened DiPietro, who never saw the puck sail past him.
Tom Poti answered with a power-play goal for the Isles at 9:31 to even the score at 3-3.
With 6:15 left in the third, Paul Mara put Boston in front with his third goal of the season. From the blueline, Savard slid the puck down low to Mara, who tucked the disc inside the left post and over the goal line.
New York continued to fight back, and with 1:39 left in regulation, Kozlov netted a power-play goal to tie the game at 4-4. From the left boards, Alexei Yashin hit Kozlov in front with a pass and he quickly fired a shot through the legs of Toivonen.
With just seconds remaining in the extra session, Boyes fired a wrister from in tight that DiPietro just got a piece of with his right arm to send the game into a shootout.
