SAN DIEGO (AP) -The San Diego Chargers won 10 straight games going into the playoffs last season, clinched home-field advantage and a first-round bye, then completely tanked against New England. Some Chargers still shake their heads at the unfathomable mistakes they made that day, the kind of blunders they didn't make in going 14-2. So here come the Chargers again, having won six straight and 10 of 12 heading into their home playoff game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The AFC West champion Charg |

| rs, Jones is an island icon. He played quarterback for Hawaii in the early 1970s and got his coaching start in 1983 as its quarterbacks coach. Before returning to Hawaii, Jones spent more than a decade in the NFL, serving as interim coach of the San Diego Chargers in 1998. Jones turned down an offer for more than $1 million annually to stay with the Chargers and chose Hawaii, which offered him a little over $320,000 a year. He now earns $800,000, plus incentives, and is in his final season of his contract.< |

SAN DIEGO (AP) -The San Diego Chargers auditioned four kickers on Thursday and could sign one of them to handle kickoff duties due to Nate Kaeding's bruised lower left leg. ``Coach will make that decision,'' general manager A.J. Smith said, referring to Norv Turner. A decision could come on Friday. Kaeding bruised his lower left leg helping to make a tackle on a kickoff in Monday night's 23-3 win against Denver. Turner said on Wednesday that Kaeding should be able to handle field goals but not kickoffs. Th |

BALTIMORE (AP) -The NFL playoff formula asserts that the Pittsburgh Steelers can earn a No. 3 seed in the AFC playoffs if they beat the Baltimore Ravens and the San Diego Chargers lose to Oakland. If that was the only thing at stake Sunday, Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the majority of the starters would probably be sitting on the bench wearing baseball caps by the second quarter. Coming off a 10-day layoff and playing their first game without injured running back Willie Parker, the Steeler |

SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's on YouTube now, so it must have happened, right? Well, San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers tried to downplay his animated exchange with Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler on Monday night, which was caught by ESPN's cameras. Rivers can be seen jawing from the sideline toward Cutler, who had just thrown an incomplete pass on fourth down midway through the fourth quarter of the Chargers' 23-3 victory. Chargers linebacker Matt Wilhelm can be seen mockingly waving toward Cutler |

SAN DIEGO (AP) -To some San Diego Chargers, there's a playoff seeding to secure and a rushing title to win. To others, such as defenders Luis Castillo and Shawne Merriman, they're simply happy to be playing. The Chargers maintained the inside track to the AFC's No. 3 seed and helped spring LaDainian Tomlinson into the NFL rushing lead with a 23-3 win over division rival Denver on Monday night. They also welcomed back Castillo after a six-week absence following ankle surgery, and got Merriman back after h |

The Steelers (10-5) won't know going into Sunday's late afternoon game against the Ravens (4-11) what their final playoff positioning will be, thanks in part to the San Diego Chargers' 23-3 victory over Denver on Monday night. Even if the Steelers win, the Chargers' superior conference record would assure them of being the No. 3 seed in the AFC playoffs if they beat Oakland (4-11) on Sunday.
