NEW YORK (AP) -Isiah Thomas avoided an NBA suspension, even though the league said Thursday there was contact between the New York Knicks coach and the official who threw him out of a game.

The league ruled the contact wasn't initiated by Thomas, but accidentally created by official Eric Lewis while he was ejecting Thomas from Wednesday night's game against Houston.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank called it ``inadvertent contact from the official in signaling the technical foul.''

Wins by Timberwolves, Knicks make it good night for some of the bad teams NBA Basketball 01/09/2008

It was a good night for a couple of the NBA's bad teams. And another reminder that the Miami Heat are now one of them.

The New York Knicks snapped a seven-game losing streak, and league-worst Minnesota ended an eight-game skid. Of course, the Timberwolves did it by beating Miami, so maybe that wasn't saying much.

``We're not exactly 28-5 this year,'' Dwyane Wade said of his 8-27 Heat, who have the worst record in the Eastern Conference. ``We're one of the worst teams in the league as well.''

Deng, averaging 17.9 points, left in the second quarter of last Thursday's double-overtime loss to Portland after aggravating a problem that arose in an

People from the streets to the suburbs were wearing $100-plus basketball shoes, which was unheard of at the time.

That price is the norm today, but it has launched a backlash, such as the partnership between New York Knicks player Stephon Marbury and the Steve & Barry's store chain to sell basketball shoes for $14.98 - a direct stab at pricey sneakers like Air Jordans.

At that time, the Air Jordan captured a mix of design, marketing, athleticism and player charis
