| NBC and Canada's CBC plan to take advantage of camera stands on the field, generally used for football games, to call this one from the great outdoors. As cold as it might be, it doesn't compare to the brutal conditions of four years ago when the Montreal Canadiens beat the host Oilers in the Heritage Classic at Edmonton. If a postponement is necessary, the game will be shifted to Wednesday and will be played under the lights. ``Once you're out there, you bundle up and go out and play,'' Penguins forward R |

Brendan Shanahan sure doesn't mess around in overtime. For the second time in three weeks, Shanahan scored early in the extra session, this one capping a 4-3 comeback victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday night to extend the New York Rangers' winning streak to three games. Bitter cold, funny hats and lots of extra clothing. That's what Ryan Smyth remembers from the first NHL game played outdoors. Smyth skated in the Oilers' 4-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium on Nov. 22, 2003. The players and the 57,167 parka-clad fans endured a wind chill of minus 4 degrees. ``It was so cold, the ice would chip away,'' Smyth told The Canadian Press. ``Chunks of ice would come out.'' Milder weather is forecast for the NHL's second outdoor game, the Winter |

The other time the NHL played a real game outside was on Nov. 22, 2003, when the Montreal Canadiens went to Edmonton to take on the Oilers in the subfreezing temperatures of Alberta. That event, dubbed the ``Heritage Classic,'' came off after three years of prep work. It was a smash hit, from the ski cap on the head of Canadiens goalie Jose Theo |
