Smith spent most of his career (1980-90) playing for Houston and he also pitched two years for the Chicago Cubs (1991-92). A two-time All-Star, he compiled a record of 53-53 with a 2.67 ERA and 216 saves over 609 games. After his playing career, Smith served as a pitching coach for the San Diego Padres.
