CINCINNATI (AP) -The NFL cleared linebacker Odell Thurman to resume working out with the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday, a step toward reinstatement from his two-year suspension.

Thurman will be allowed to work out with the training staff at Paul Brown Stadium. He's hoping for full reinstatement before the team's minicamp in April.

``We see it as a positive,'' agent Safarrah Lawson said Saturday in a phone interview. ``It's an opportunity to get reacclimated with the team, to work with the strength and con

I think they're very promising here,'' he said. ``They're all young, they're all eager. I understand they all work very hard.''

The Chargers wideouts are led by Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson.

Joiner played with the Houston Oilers (1969-72), Cincinnati Bengals (1972-75) and Chargers (1976-86).

He remains San Diego's career leader with 586 catches in 11 seasons. His 9,203 receiving yards rank second in team history behind Hall of Famer Lance Alworth, and his 47 touchdown catches rank third behind Alworth

CINCINNATI (AP) -Jeff FitzGerald was hired by the Cincinnati Bengals on Wednesday as linebackers coach, a role he held at Baltimore the last three seasons.

FitzGerald follows former Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer to the Bengals as coach Marvin Lewis works on a struggling defense. The Bengals missed the playoffs the last two seasons.

Four Ravens linebackers - Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, Terrell Suggs and Adalius Thomas - were chosen for the 2006 Pro Bowl and the Ravens have been among the NFL

Former Bengal Pete Johnson accused of passing bad check NFL Football 01/18/2008

URBANA, Ohio (AP) -Former Cincinnati Bengals fullback Pete Johnson has been accused of writing a bad check for $13,300 to buy a pickup truck, authorities said.

Johnson, 53, who played for the Bengals from 1977 to 1983, was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Champaign County Common Pleas Court on one count of passing bad checks and one count of grand theft of a motor vehicle.

Johnson took possession of the truck from an auto dealership in September, police said. A bank later notified the dealership that J

The 51-year-old Zimmer was introduced Wednesday as the Cincinnati Bengals' next defensive coordinator, their third since Lewis became head coach before the 2003 season. During Lewis' five years, he has failed to get the defense up to standards.
